What Are the Key Differences Between Clear Aligners and Traditional Braces?

If you’re debating using a clear aligner method like Invisalign vs. braces to straighten your teeth, you should consider the differences between the two. Both treatments can achieve similar results but have some key differences.

  • Appearance: Traditional braces are made of metal, which can be pretty noticeable when you smile. Invisalign, on the other hand, is made of clear plastic and is virtually invisible when you wear them.
  • Treatment Method: Conventional braces use brackets and wires to slowly move teeth into position over time. Invisalign aligners, on the other hand, use a series of clear, customized aligners designed specifically for each patient.
  • Cost: Generally, traditional metal braces and Invisalign cost is comparable at between $3,000 and $8,000. Orthodontic insurance usually covers both braces and Invisalign.
  • Eating and Drinking: With conventional braces, it’s essential to avoid hard or sticky foods that could damage the braces or get stuck in them. Since Invisalign aligners are removable, you can take them out to eat and drink as you usually would.
  • Treatment Time: Traditional braces typically require more extended treatment, often taking 18 months or more to achieve results. Invisalign usually achieves results in a shorter timeframe, 12 months or less.

Which Is More Effective: Metal Braces or Invisalign?

For many people, the choice between braces or Invisalign comes down to efficiency. Both treatment options can achieve excellent results, but Invisalign clear aligners usually have a bit of a competitive edge over braces:

  • They often work faster at aligning teeth and are more comfortable for patients.
  • There’s less of a chance of tooth discoloration with clear aligners.
  • You’ll have fewer orthodontist visits with Invisalign treatments than if you were to go with traditional braces.
  • It will be easier to maintain oral health by removing them for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing.

At Southeastern Dental Center, we offer Invisalign clear aligners as part of our orthodontic services. When you come in for a consultation, we’ll do an exam to determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign. We’ll also help you understand whether braces or Invisalign is the best choice for you, and we are happy to help you compare Invisalign to other transparent aligner brands on the market.
